This review is way behing schedule, seeing as i saw the film about two weeks ago, but oh well better late than never i guess :P
Paul is the story of two nerds, Clive (played by Nick Frost) and Graeme (played by Simon Pegg) who are aspiring comic book writer-artist duo from the UK, who go to America for Comicon and then on a road trip to visit the US' most infamous ufo sites. Not soon after they meet up with Paul (voiced by Seth Rogan), an alien who has been a "guest" of the US government for the last 60 years and now wishes to return home and therefore is being hunted by secret agents. Cue a zany adventure to return Paul to his people in typical Pegg/Frost style that has them doing what they do best!
Okay, ad style intro over. Overall I thought Paul was a pretty awesome movie, the jokes were pretty funny and although the humour was a bit vulger (on purpose) at times, I found myself laughing through most of it. Also as this film is meant to be an homage to the great sci-fi films of the 70's/80's there are cult references through-out to classics such as ET, Closer Encounters of the Third Kind, The Fifth Element and numerous others, so those of you who know your sci-fi films will probably get more out of it than those who don't. The character of stereotypical bible-basher southener Ruth (played by Kristin Wiig) was also an interesting turn that I hadn't seen coming, with her intial confrontation with Paul being one of the highlights of the movie in my opinon. She is definatly the character that undergoes the most development over the course of the movie, with her coming to grips with the existance of extraterrestrial life and that the world isn't as based around the christian faith as she thought (helped along by a healthy brain zap by Paul) being one of the most suprising and interesting points with of the movie.
In conclusion i will admit the story probably could have had more structure to it, with it never really making it clear what the characters are suppose to be doing, something that the characters themselves voice during the film, so it may be intential, who knows. But the film is a geniunly good sci-fi romp, with Pegg and Frost being up to their excellent standered as per usual. If you have an inkeling to go watch this film, make sure you do.
Score - 8.5/10
